After Balmain’s death in 1982, subsequent creative directors have been Herve Pierre, Oscar de la Renta, Christophe Decarnin, and current director, young French designer Olivier Rouesting, who has brought a fresh new modernity to the house.
Current Creative Director: Olivier Rouesting
Considered by many to be one of the greatest tailors of the century, Pierre Balmain was born in Saint Jean de Maurienne, France in 1914. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in 1945 he founded the Maison Balmain as a couture house, with a lucrative sideline in fragrances. His line was known for its sophistication and elegance, and he described the art of dressmaking as "the architecture of movement.”
