Giorgio Armani, born in Italy on July 11, in 1934, is arguably one of the most iconic fashion designer of Italy, if not the world. After starting as a window dresser at a department store in Milan, he worked his way up the ranks of menswear and created his first women’s and men’s ready-to-wear collections in 1976.
His popularity skyrocketed in America in the 1980s with his men’s ‘power suits’ after being featured on actor Richard Gere in the 1980 film American Gigolo. He attracted an enviable fashion following in the 80s with his clean, tailored lines, unique unstructured jackets and soft trousers in mineral hues. He is also credited with pioneering the era of red-carpet fashion, dressing stars such as George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.
He has expanded his fashion empire to include lower price brand Emporio Armani, as well as mass-market brand Armani Exchange. With more than three decades of successful business, Armani has enjoyed a rare longevity as a designer that can be matched by few others.
