After studying architecture, Rabanne started his career in fashion by creating jewelry and accessories for Givenchy, Dior, Balenciaga, Charles Jourdan and Roger Model. He founded his own fashion house in 1966 by presenting his notorious collection “Manifesto: 12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials”. He used unconventional material such as metal, paper, and plastic for his “Metal Couture” and outlandish and flamboyant designs.
Rabanne has solidified a place in fashion history with his instantly recognizable chainmail and plastic and metal paillette dresses. The company has continued to evolve beyond its 60s heydays with the appointment of contemporary design leaders such as Julien Dossena, a protege of Nicolas Ghesquière. The brand has also had great success in the fragrance industry.
