After her death in 1946, the brand was passed on through the family and then eventually to private investors, beginning a slow decline. After the appointment of Alber Elbaz to creative director in 2001, he turned the company around with his iconic, elegant French style - using exquisite tailoring, beautifully draped dresses, and eye-catching embroidery. After his much-lamented departure in 2016 caused by disagreements with the management, the company struggled to find a suitable new director.
