At least we can bet that Raf Simons and Calvin Klein did not have time to incur any lawyers fees. After directing the brand for only two years, Raf Simons will be leaving Calvin Klein in probably one of the most short-lived director posts in fashion history. The evening of Friday, December 21, 2018 the Calvin Klein brand announced via a press release, that it was separating, by mutual agreement, from its creative director, the celebrated Raf Simons. The brand has chosen to go in a new direction, contrary to what Raf Simons had suggested for the brand. The Director General also reportedly blamed Raf Simons for poor sales results. The brand might have given too much responsibility to Simons, who had made many changes, bringing in his own in-house team and not integrating properly with the Calvin Klein core team. These internal scuffles most certainly strained relationships with management. Subsequently, the brand announced that it will not present a spring collection this year at NY Fashion Week, disappointing a large number of Simons & Calvin Klein fans and journalists.
The previous year, ironically, had been a year of success for Raf Simons and the Calvin Klein brand. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, the brand had caused quite a sensation thanks to its evermore original creations. Raf Simons had won numerous awards from the CFDA and three awards from the US Designers Council. The collaboration between Calvin Klein and Raf Simons has at least put the somewhat staid brand back into the spotlight in the world of fashion and has allowed Raf Simons to revive his reputation and showcase his womenswear talents to the general public. We still do not know at this time whether the brand has decided to replace him, or how Raf Simons will bounce back after this unexpected news.
