With millions of shoppers either working from home or unemployed at home amidst the coronavirus epidemic, trends of retail sales of clothing have quickly taken a turn. New data shows a marked increase in sales of loungewear and activewear.
Sales of formalwear and partywear have decreased significantly, as people are not going out anymore. Walmart did report, however, a rise in shirt sales but not of bottoms, due to the need for video conferencing.
Sales of loungewear have increased dramatically. Buyers are seeking comfortable clothing made of soft, stretchy, breathable jersey fabrics. Styles such as hoodies, sweatpants, leggings, and bathrobes are much coveted, even selling out at some stores, as stay-at-homers prioritize comfort over style. Consumers are also increasingly purchasing activewear as they look for ways to keep fit at home. Sales of sports leggings and sports bras have been steadily increasing.
But will these trends continue once the lockdown is over? According to a recent survey by Nordstrom Trunk Club, 40% of respondents say they are looking forward to dressing up for the office again, while another 33% say they are hoping to go back to the office in more comfortable clothes. For those that enjoy dressing up, most of them felt more productive and in a more positive mood being dressed up.
At the same time, other experts are saying that workplace dynamics will never be the same again. Many companies may decide to continue to allow their employees to work from home indefinitely, thereby reducing the need to pay for expensive physical office spaces in city centers. One thing is certain - this pandemic has forever changed the way we work and dress.
