Ahead of a new decade, the Pantone Color Institute has announced that its 2020 Color of the Year is PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue – a deep blue shade that is dependable, comforting, and boundless. It’s a color that resonates with a lot of people – bringing to mind the serene waters of the ocean, the wide-open evening sky, or a classically tailored suit. In the current times of change, fear, hope, with the fast-paced, high-stress situations of the constantly changing world, people need dependability, trustworthiness, and credibility. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, says “It’s a reassuring blue, full of calm and confidence. It builds connection.”
The color seems fitting for this moment in time – it’s genderless, seasonless, and approachable. It also brings to mind indigo shades – which are achieved through natural dyes, encouraging a message of sustainability. And though the color might be seen as some as nostalgic or conventional, it’s also highly contemporary and versatile enough to be seen from high-end runways to high-street fast fashion.
